Apple has scheduled its next major product event for 9 September at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino. Under the tagline “Surprise and shine”, the presentation is expected to unveil new iPhones, Apple Watches and AirPods, as well as, according to market expectations, the company’s first foldable iPhone.

But this event will carry a different significance from those that came before it.

It will be Apple’s first major presentation since John Ternus officially takes over as CEO on 1 September, succeeding Tim Cook, who will move into the role of Executive Chairman.

Ternus takes the helm after more than two decades at Apple and a career deeply connected to hardware development. As Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, he has been involved in the evolution of products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, as well as projects related to materials, durability and design.

The succession has also been carefully planned. Apple announced the transition in April and made it clear that Tim Cook will remain closely involved with the company, contributing to strategic and institutional matters.

Even so, taking the helm of Apple means inheriting one of the most closely watched corporate leadership roles in the world.

And Ternus’s first major event comes at a moment when the company could unveil one of its most significant product shifts in years: its entry into the foldable smartphone market.

There are corporate successions in which a new leader is expected to transform the company.

John Ternus faces a different challenge: leading an extraordinarily successful company without allowing the success of the past to limit the innovation of the future.

Tim Cook took over Apple after Steve Jobs and transformed the company into a global powerhouse of scale, efficiency and profitability. Now, Ternus inherits a mature, highly valuable business with an exceptionally loyal customer base — but also one facing investor expectations for new cycles of innovation.

The appointment of an executive with such deep hardware expertise may offer a clue as to Apple’s next chapter. In a market increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence and digital services, the company appears to remain committed to the belief that the experience begins with the product.

The September event, therefore, will be more than a presentation of new devices.

It will be the first opportunity to observe how John Ternus intends to put his own stamp on one of the world’s most valuable brands.

When a company is already at the top, is a new leader’s greatest challenge to transform the business — or to know exactly what should not change?
