With 32 awards at the World Travel Awards, the country strengthens its position in international tourism, showcasing a diverse range of experiences, from vibrant cities to breathtaking Atlantic landscapes.

Portugal was named Europe’s Leading Destination at the 2026 World Travel Awards, held on 17 October in Kotor, Montenegro.

The recognition was part of an edition in which the country received 32 awards, including Europe’s Leading Tourist Board, presented to Turismo de Portugal.

Among the destinations recognised were Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira and the Azores, each honoured in categories covering city tourism, culture, beaches, nature and adventure.

The diversity of Portugal’s tourism offering helps explain its success across so many categories.

Lisbon brings together heritage, gastronomy and vibrant city life. Porto stands out for its cultural and architectural identity. The Algarve maintains its appeal as a beach destination, while Madeira and the Azores offer experiences centred on nature and Atlantic landscapes.

This combination allows the country to appeal to different types of travellers, from those seeking cultural city breaks to visitors interested in adventure tourism.

The awards also invite a broader reflection on destination positioning.

Portugal does not rely on a single city or attraction to build its international image. Its strength lies in the combination of experiences, the appreciation of its heritage and the promotion of its different regions.

The recognition awarded to Turismo de Portugal reinforces the importance of institutional tourism promotion in this process.

Although awards are not, in themselves, indicators of economic growth or universal visitor satisfaction, they contribute to a destination’s international visibility and reputation within the tourism market.

In tourism, a country’s identity can be just as important as the beauty of its landscapes.

In an increasingly competitive tourism market, Portugal demonstrates the value of bringing different experiences together under a recognisable identity.

What makes you choose a destination: its landscapes, its culture or the experience it promises to offer?
